Poster Presentation: Beyond Fed-Batch: A Practical Guide to Intensified and Perfusion-Based Bioprocessing

Traditional fed-batch processes have traditionally relied on scale-up to increase production, introducing significant risk, cost, and operational complexity due to non-linear scaling and facility constraints. In contrast, intensified perfusion-based processes increase productivity by maintaining high cell densities and viability, enabling flexible output by extending culture duration rather than increasing scale. These approaches can deliver substantial gains in volumetric productivity with consistent product quality, while reducing facility footprint. However, adoption remains limited due to complexity in implementation. This work aims to clarify key differences, tradeoffs, and practical considerations between fed-batch and intensified perfusion processes.
